Celebrating African American culture and in commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, Juneteenth is celebrated across the US and wider on June 19. A historical event marked each year since its inception back in 1866, this year was particularly memorable as President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law just two days prior. Juneteenth is now officially a federal holiday.

Elsewhere, protests continued throughout major cities including; Japan, in protest against the Olympic Games that saw its first case of COVID from a team this weekend. In Istanbul, Women and LGBTQ activists stood in solidarity against Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, The Council on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. In London and Brazil in demonstration against President Jair Bolsonaro and the nation’s handling of COVID as deaths surpassed 500,000 this weekend. And finally, in São Paulo, protesters of all ages occupied Avenida Paulista in a poignant act during Ato Fora Bolsonaro, held this Saturday.

In France, the regional elections took place with an unprecedented rate of abstention. As an estimated 68% of voters evaded the polling stations, the President and his government failed to mobilize and motivated supporters to go out and vote this weekend. With the only consolation for the governing party coming from the opposition, Marine Le Pen’s far right National Rally also failing to assemble his party’s expected support, Macron looks to be on shaky ground with voters as the center-right takes the lead in early exit polls.

In sport, the Euro’s are well underway with teams in their groups battling it out to qualify for the next stage. With games this weekend from Germany, France, England, Switzerland,  Italy and more, Germany played an exciting match against Portugal and took the victory with a win 4-2.

UEFA confirmed last night that the German captain, Manuel Neuer, will not face action or punishment after an investigation was held as he has been wearing a rainbow armband during the Championship so far. With June being Pride month, the goalkeeper stated that it was to show his support for the LGBTQ+ community and not a political statement.

Elsewhere in sport, TSG Ludwigshafen Friesenheim played THW Kiel in the 1 Handball Bundesliga in the final that saw Kiel take the victory. The French Swimming Championships were underway with Fantine Lesaffre swimming in the women’s 200 backstroke. Despite no one breaking the qualifying time for the Olympic games, the sixth day of the Championship was marked by Medhi Metella’s performance in the 100m butterfly and Florent Manaudou’s disappointment in the 50m freestyle.
