With one week left until the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, we are looking at some highlights from the past.
2022 FIFA World Cup Countdown. IMAGO’s Archive Highlights.
IMAGO’s hometeam of Germany has always had a prominent place in our archives. We take a trip down memory lane at their four World Cup wins throughout the decades. On November 23, Germany will play their first match against Japan, kicking off another round at a World Cup. The team failed to make it past the first group stage during the 2018 World Cup in Russia – the first time since 1938. Now with a new trainer Hansi Flick, fans will be eager to see if they can make it to their fifth win.
Brazil will also be back in Qatar – as the powerhouse has taken home the most World Cups at a record of five, we look back at its golden years when Pele was still on the pitch. Italy with four World Cup titles will have to sit this one out unfortunately, but our archives have not forgotten them.
With Argentina back this year fighting to win their fourth title, we are also looking at the late champion Diego Maradona in his glory days. Will rivals Germany and Argentina have their fourth final-match-face-off in Qatar? Will England relive their 1966 World Cup victory? Will France take home a consecutive win?
While there are plenty of possible outcomes, IMAGO reminisces on its highlights from the FIFA World Cup archives – the drama, the tears, and the triumphs.
