As Afghanistan begins to live under the Taliban, thousands of fighters have reportedly filled into the Panjshir Valley and claimed victory. With resistance forces disputing the claim, the valley is the last major holdout against the Taliban. As it continues, lives have begun opening up with markets in Kabul and other parts of the country breathing life back into cityscapes.
Elsewhere, images from around the world of the civilians that were evacuated from Kabul have begun to emerge in the media. Including joyful scenes of Air Force airmen playing with young Afghan refugees during their stay at Holloman Air Force Base which has created temporary housing for at least 50,000 people.
In the week leading up to the 20th anniversary of 911, people around the world and the US have begun their remembrance. In New York City, Color guards carry flags during the 911 Walk of Remembrance. The march has been performed yearly to remember those lost during the 911 terror attack and to remember Father Mychal Judge, a chaplain who served the New York City Fire Department NYFD.
This month also is set to see hundreds of millions of children return to their classrooms. For some it has been up to 18 months since children last stepped foot in a classroom as the COVID crisis gripped the globe and saw third world countries suffer immensely. Studies have shown that large percentages of school kids have fallen dangerously behind since lock downs began and school closures ensued as pupils and teachers around the world try to resume their education in a safe environment. In places like the Philippines, India and Zimbabwe, children have already started to return with members of the local communities pitching in with cleaning, organizing and preparing children for their new school year.
In sport, as the Paralympics ended this weekend and Tokyo put on a dazzling display for their closing ceremony, controversy in sport erupted. After Thursday night’s match in which England won 4-0 to the home nation’s team, Gareth Southgate has called for FIFA to take strong action after Hungary fans targeted England players with racist outbursts, throwing of beers and monkey chants. Hungary already have to play their next 3 home UEFA competition matches without fans present after “discriminatory behavior” by their supporters at Euro 2020.
Sunday’s World Cup qualifier between Argentina and Brazil was interrupted and eventually cancelled after it has been said that four Premier League players violated Brazilian COVID regulations. Officials from Brazil took to the pitch after seven minutes of the match to pull Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez and Tottenham’s Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso off the pitch after they broke COVID restrictions stating that travelers who have been in the UK, South Africa or India in the previous 14 days are banned from entering Brazil without being a citizen or resident.
