Last week, protests raged last week in Colombian cities, as at least 30 protesters have died since demonstrations began. After President Ivan Duque announced a tax overhaul due to the state of the country’s economy after the pandemic, demonstrations against the poverty and inequality increase erupted. Amid these protests, Sunday saw trans and LGBTQI+ communities lead further demonstrations as thousands flooded the center of Bogota against the cases of police brutality since the health reform proposition.

Military parades and fireworks marked Victory Day across Russia in celebration of the 76th anniversary of the country’s defeat against Nazi Germany in World War II. From Russian Air Force troops marching through Lenin Square, Cadets of the Tambov Cadet Corps taking part in the Victory Day parade to fireworks displayed over St Petersburg the country turned out in pride and remembrance. Memorials and celebrations were also held across the Ukraine and here in Berlin at the Soviet memorial, Treptower Park.

Meanwhile also on Sunday, Palestinians took to protest against Israeli actions in Jerusalem. Palestinian citizens of Israel were met with a strong Israeli police in response during the protest in Haifa after 180 people are reported to be injured overnight as Israeli police stormed the Al-Aqsa mosque compound.

Elsewhere, Gaza City Palestinians waited in line for free soup during the Muslim fasting month on Ramadan as the Muslim Holy Month draws to a close this coming week. And protests took place in Tokyo as activists took a stand against the upcoming Olympic games that are still set to take place as they say that the event plays a huge threat to public health.

In sport, Sir Lewis Hamilton, lifts his winning trophy during the Spanish GP at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday. Therese Johaug of Norway competed in the women’s 10000 meter during Varens vakreste stafett on Saturday.

Saturday was the kick off of this year’s Giro d’Italia’s annual multiple-stage bicycle race held in Italy whilst also passing through neighbouring countries. The first stage this weekend was won by 24 year old, Filippo Ganna in Turin.
