Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II for 73 years and father of Prince Charles sadly passed away on April 9, aged 99. Announced by Buckingham Palace, the Duke of Edinburgh died peacefully at Windsor Castle. As the nation celebrated his life over the weekend, tributes were made across the country from crowds gathering to lay flowers at both Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle to black taxi drivers lining the length of The Mall in a poignant tribute. His funeral is to be held on April 17.
With tensions already high in a state already on the edge over the Chauvin trial for the murder of George Floyd, hundreds of protesters took to the streets once more in Minneapolis this weekend. 20-year-old Daunte Wright was shot by police on Sunday afternoon after an office pulled over a vehicle for an alleged traffic collision. That evening, hundreds of protesters marched to the Brooklyn Center police station where they were met by officers dressed in riot gear and armed with teargas.
Elsewhere in the United States, outnumbered White Lives Matter and counter Black Lives Matter demonstrators faced off in Huntington Beach, California. The unlawful assembly of the WLM movement led to arrests and police deployed to disperse unruly crowds as larger anti-racism demonstrators also came out in protest.
The results of the Ecuador election were announced on Sunday as Ex-banker Guillermo Lasso defeated socialist economist Andres Arauz in Ecuador’s presidential runoff. With his policital believes in tax cuts to boost the economy and as a proponent of measures to reduce public debt, this was the third time Lasso had run for presidency and will overtake Arauz whose mentor was former leftist President Rafael Correa, now living in exile in Belgium after criminal charges of corruption amounted to an 18 year prison sentence.
In sport, Minella Times crossed the line in first place, with jockey Rachael Blackmore becoming the first female jockey to win the historic Grand National. In the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich failed to win against Berlin Union on Saturday, fueling Hansi Flick’s exit speculation. And in women’s football, Germany beat Olympic bound Australia in Wiesbaden. Despite four players being forced to go into COVID-19 quarantine shortly before the match kicked off, the German women’s team remained dominant for the majority of the game leading to the impressive 5-2 score at full time.
