This week saw thousands of students turn out in the streets of Athens, Greece. Protesting a bill introduced in parliament on Wednesday that would, among other things, impose stricter campus security measures and create a police force on campus, students clashed with police officers throughout the city.

Meanwhile, in India Thursday marked the renowned Makar Sankranti celebration. A day considered to be of great religious significance in Hindu mythology, pilgrims offered prayers and bathed in the rivers around 150km south of Kolkata.

Elsewhere around the world, many faced yet even more restrictions on daily life due to COVID 19 with buses checked for masks in Russia, Australian medical units tested and drilled for upcoming expected high admissions and curfews applied to countries including France who now have until 6pm to return home.

In sport this week, fans of Sao Paulo’s soccer team, the Palmeiras, luminated the bus route that takes players from the training center to the stadium as they disputed a place in the final of the Conmebol Liberadores Cup on Tuesday. The 43rd edition of the Dakar rally, held in Saudi Arabia, ended this Friday with Honda defending their title and victory for driver Benavides. In colder climates, the women’s Luge Nations Cup was held in Germany with Julia Taubitz taking the win in the women’s singles.
