Violence and looting erupted in Barcelona this weekend in protest of the court conviction of rapper, Pablo Hassel. In the fifth night of unrest in the city, streets burned and shops were smashed as thousands of riot police battled protesters who demanded the release of the jailed rapper. The social activist, poet and rapper who was arrested and convicted of criticizing the country’s monarchy and glorifying a separatist group on social media, ignited immediate demonstrations on Saturday night and throughout the Catalan city, with demonstrators dangerously protesting his nine month sentence.

Elsewhere, law enforcement officers gathered to stand guard outside the offices of the Armenian Government during an opposition rally, on Saturday, for the resignation of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Freedom Square. And in Belgium, Brussels demonstrated in support of the reopening of the world of culture, after almost one year of closure. 

In sport, this weekend the Australian Open saw an exciting end in both the Men’s singles and the women’s as Novak Djokovic took the title this Sunday for a record breaking, ninth time. Beating his young, fourth-ranked Russian opponent, Daniil Medvedev, in straight sets, saw Djokovic win his 18th career Grand Slam title over all. And Naomi Osaka became the first woman to win her first four grand slam finals. After winning her second Australian Open, the 23 year old player lifted the trophy and her World ranking. 

In football, the German women’s soccer team celebrated their 2-0 defeat over Belgium on Sunday with Svenja Huth scoring in the first 2 minutes of the match. And in Spanish football, this weekend’s La Liga match between Real Sociedad and Deportivo Alaves held at Reale Arena stadium in San Sebastian, saw empty seats as another match was played without a live audience.
