Meet our contributor, Jochen Eckel. Documenting people and their stories, the Berlin-based photographer, and IMAGO partner, describes his work as “real, authentic, focused, close, creative.”

Explaining how his craft has taught him to be in the right place at the right time and the skill in capturing the story, Eckel spoke to IMAGO about his view on the role of photography today as a tool to document  and as an “important contemporary witness” and more about his creative process.

Let’s kick off, how did you get started in photography and why?

I was always interested in making images.

 

What was your first experience with a camera?

Developing a black and white film.

 

What five words describe your photographic style or captured message?

Real, authentic, focused, close, creative.

What is the best element about being a photographer, and most challenging?
I love to take photos.

It is always exciting to deal with people or situations, to illustrate a story.

To you, what is the role photography has in the world?

Photography is an important contemporary witness.

What one important lesson has your work taught you?

To be in the best place at the right moment, where the story is happening.

What is currently really getting you frustrated or annoyed?

Not having illustrated the story properly.

Every moment is worth it, one of the great privileges as a photographer is being witness of historic moments all of the time.
