Meet the Contributor: Martin Bertrand for Hans Lucas

French photography agency, Hans Lucas showcases the captivating work of photographer Martin Bertrand in his series, “Oasis Kerlanic - An Autonomous Community in Brittany.” With his beautifully organic style and charming portraiture photography, Bertrand aims to use his work to get the attention of the people and discover the true power of photography.

Let’s kick off, how did you get started in photography and why?
I began photography when I was teenager. At this time, I photographed a lot of my friends skateboarding. And after, I discovered the power of photography. The possibility to travel, discover new ways of life, and the capacity to communicate our world and our times.

What was your first experience with a camera?
I think that it was when I was child. During the holidays, my parents often gave me a disposable camera. Thanks to my parents!

What five words describe your photographic style or captured message?
It’s some thematics like newspaper columns :
ENVIRONMENT – YOUTH – POLITICS – SPORT – SOCIETY `

What is the best element about being a photographer, and most challenging?
The best element is the possibility for very ambitious projects. The most challenging element is to always try to do my best for the visual research of my photos and the impact of my projects.

To you, what is the role photography has in the world?
The role of photography is to get the attention of the people.

What one important lesson has your work taught you?
The key lesson is that it’s very important to be interested in the world around us.

What is currently really getting you frustrated or annoyed?
I cannot be in different places in the same time to take pictures.

If you could photograph any historical event, what would it be and why?
It would be during the communist revolution in China. I’m really interested by this part of the world and it’s a very important event.

What does success look like to you?
To be able to continue to be a photographer.
