Remembering all those names who lost their lives on that fatal day, the ceremony included a city-wide moment of silence for five poignant points in time, beginning at 8.46am to mark the moment that hijacked Flight 11 struck the North Tower. Following, moments of silence continued throughout the morning to remember when the South Tower was struck, when both towers fell, the attack on the Pentagon and the crash of Flight 93. Presidents Bill Clinton, Obama and Joe Biden attended the ceremony amongst victims, victims family members and first responders where they laid flowers, mourned loved ones and gathered as a community.
In Germany, ahead of the national elections taking place in two week’s time, polls have predicted that Laschet’s CDU has dropped to historic lows as the party’s four-term chancellor comes to an end. Last night saw a televised election debate featuring center-left frontrunner Olaf Scholz in debate with Annalena Baerbock and Armin Laschet in Berlin.
Elsewhere, Israeli fighter jets attacked military posts early on Sunday morning in a bid to hit Hamas fighter groups. Facilities belonging to the armed wing of the Islamic Resistance Movement in the Gaza Strip after tensions rose this week between Israel and the Palestinians when six Palestine militants escaped from a maximum security prison. This latest rocket attack from Israel is said to be in response to Gaza militant firing into Israel on Friday and then again on Saturday. There are no reported casualties.
In politics around the world, this weekend saw more protesting in various cities, covering continents as political unrest continues for many. Bangkok saw violent protests continue in the Anti-government rally calling for the ousting of Thai Prime Minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha.
After his latest speech on vaccination across Greece, the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis faced backlash from anti COVID vaccine protesters as they clashed with riot police in Thessaloniki. In Athens, thousands turned out in the capital for this years Gay Pride event. Amongst celebration and remembrance, this year also saw many in protest against homophobic, transphobic and racism in Greek society, demonstrating too against police violence, patriarchy, inequality, isolation and abuse. And in Chile, September 11 marks the 48th anniversary of the coup in Chile and the death of Salvador Allende with large numbers taking the streets in remembrance and demonstration.
In sport this weekend, Cristiano Ronaldo made headlines as he took to the pitch for Manchester United in his first game back after the latest transfer. Scoring two goals in the match against Newcastle and that ended 4-1 at full time, the Portuguese superstar delighted home fans.
Emma Raducanu has won the US Open. The British 18 year old made tennis history this weekend with her win in the final that saw her not lose a single set. In what was Raducanu’s second ever grand slam main draw appearance, no other woman in the Open era has ever won in for few attempts. After cementing her name in the history books and aligning with legends, the young player will be one to watch for here on out.
And, at the Italian Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton’s and Max Verstappen’s rivalry became potentially fatal when their two cars crashed. The two title rivals were taken out on lap 26 in a collision race stewards ultimately deemed Verstappen “predominantly to blame” as McLaren celebrated their first race win in Formula 1 since 2021 with a one-two, as Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris finished first and second respectively.
